Thunder vs. Spurs predictions: Odds, recent stats, trends and best bets for October 20

Brian Hamilton Tue, October 20, 2026 at 3:03 PM UTC · 6 min read About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement The NBA slate for tonight closes with a rematch of last season's Western Conference Finals as the San Antonio Spurs host the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Spurs finished 62-20 last season, while Oklahoma City posted a league-best 64-18 record before losing said Finals.

Staying under the second apron was the theme of Oklahoma City's summer. The Thunder traded away valuable rotation players Luguentz Dort , Isaiah Joe , and Aaron Wiggins but added center Aday Mara and guard Bennett Stirtz through the Draft. The Thunder's core remains intact, though, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander , Jalen Williams , and Chet Holmgren leading a roster that still possesses elite offensive efficiency, length, and versatility. The biggest question is whether the club's depth losses will be felt over the course of the season.

San Antonio spent the summer building around franchise superstar Victor Wembanyama and rising star Stephon Castle . The Spurs added veteran forward Tobias Harris . Unfortunately, the veteran is sidelined with a calf issue. As a result, they expect Dylan Harper to take a major step forward and assume a greater responsibility in the backcourt. The Spurs' strengths remain their length, defensive versatility, transition play, and the game-changing presence of Wembanyama, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

The primary storyline is the battle between two MVP-caliber superstars in Gilgeous-Alexander and Wembanyama, but the game also offers an early glimpse into the future of the Western Conference. Oklahoma City's championship hopes rest on whether its star trio can overcome reduced depth, while San Antonio is looking to prove last season's Finals run was merely the beginning of a budding dynasty. For two teams with legitimate title aspirations, opening night is an opportunity to immediately send a message to the rest of the league.

Lets take a closer look at the matchup and take into consideration lineups, injuries, and other factors affecting the line and total.

The Spurs are being priced like the team that won the Western Conference Finals, but the 2026-27 version has a hole on the perimeter that the market is glossing over. Tobias Harris is out with a calf injury, which means San Antonio is running a three-guard lineup of Dylan Harper , De'Aaron Fox , and Stephon Castle alongside Wembanyama and Vassell. That's a small, perimeter-oriented group that will struggle to guard Oklahoma City's length. The Thunder, meanwhile, get Jalen Williams back. He missed the entirety of the Western Conference Finals, and his return is the single biggest factor in this game. In that playoff series, the Spurs won largely because of the turnovers and stops they forced when the ball wasn't in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's hands. Now that Oklahoma City has its second ball handler back, they're a much harder team to guard.

Mitchell is stepping into a bigger role with real volume, and the matchup is a gift. He closed the regular season last year, having cleared this number in 4 of his last 5 games and 9 of his last 10. last season. Over his last 32 road games, Mitchell has hit the Over 75% of the time, averaging 7.69 assists + rebounds. Even with Jalen Williams back, Mitchell's role expands with Dort, Wiggins, and Joe gone.

His projection sits at 4.11 — above the line. With Tobias Harris out, Vassell is going to see more minutes at the three and four, which means more rebounding responsibility. Against a Thunder team that ranked 13th in defensive rebound percentage (0.697) and 28th in offensive rebound percentage (25.1%) last season, Vassell's activity on the glass should translate to extra possessions. His 10.3% defensive rebound percentage confirms this is a consistent part of his game. Against a San Antonio frontcourt that's thin without Harris, Vassell is the guy who has to pick up the slack.
